Day-by-Day Itinerary
Arrival – Addis Ababa City Tour
Welcome and transfer to hotel. Drive to Mount Entoto for panoramic city views. Visit the National Museum (home of “Lucy”), Holy Trinity Cathedral, and the Ethnographic Museum (former palace of Haile Selassie). Explore Merkato, Africa’s largest open-air market. Overnight in Addis Ababa.
Addis – Bahir Dar (via Debre Libanos & Blue Nile Gorge)
Drive north, stopping at Debre Libanos Monastery (13th century) with its museum and historic treasures. Scenic Blue Nile Gorge. Lake Zengena stop before reaching Bahir Dar. Overnight in Bahir Dar.
Bahir Dar (Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls)
Boat cruise on Lake Tana, visiting Ura Kidane Mihret Monastery (14th century). Afternoon excursion to the Blue Nile Falls (water flow may vary with season). Overnight in Bahir Dar.
Bahir Dar – Gondar (Castles & Churches)
Drive to Gondar, Ethiopia’s royal capital. Visit the Royal Enclosure with castles of Emperor Fasiladas. Debre Birhan Selassie Church, famed for its ceiling of angels. Historic Qusquam Church. Overnight in Gondar.
Gondar – Excursion to Simien Mountains
Full-day trip to Simien Mountains National Park, known for dramatic cliffs and endemic wildlife like Gelada baboons. Overnight in Gondar.
Gondar – Axum (via Debarq)
Drive to Axum, one of Ethiopia’s oldest cities. Afternoon city tour: Stelae Park with its giant obelisks, St. Mary’s Church & Chapel of the Ark, Tombs of Kaleb & Gebre Meskel, Queen of Sheba’s Bath & Palace ruins, Ezana’s Inscriptions & Axum Museum. Overnight in Axum.
Axum – Mekele (via Yeha & Tigray Churches)
Drive to Mekele, visiting Yeha Temple (5th century BC, Ethiopia’s oldest structure) and rock-hewn churches of Tigray: Abreha we Atsbeha, Wukro Cherkos, Medhane Alem Adi Kesho. Overnight in Mekele.
Mekele – Alamata – Lalibela
Drive south to Lalibela with stops at Alamata market (blend of Wello & Tigray cultures) and scenic Wollo highlands. Overnight in Lalibela.
Lalibela
Explore Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, including Bete Medhane Alem, Bete Mariam, Bete Golgotha, Bete Giorgis. Overnight in Lalibela.
Excursion to Yimrehane Kristos & More Churches
Morning: Yimrehane Kristos Cave Church, a masterpiece of Axumite design. Afternoon: Visit remaining Lalibela churches – Bete Gabriel, Bete Marqorios, Bete Emmanuel, Bete Aba Libanos. Overnight in Lalibela.
Lalibela – Kombolcha (via Dessie & Hayq Lake)
Drive south, stopping at Hayq Estifanos Monastery (13th century) on Lake Hayq. Scenic Wello highlands and Dessie town. Overnight in Kombolcha.
Kombolcha – Awash National Park
Drive to Awash National Park: safari game drive spotting oryx, kudu, baboons, warthogs, gazelles, monkeys. Visit Awash River waterfalls & Filwoha hot springs. Overnight in Awash NP.
Awash – Dire Dawa – Harar
Drive to Harar, one of the world’s oldest Islamic cities (UNESCO site). Sightseeing includes Harar Jugol Walls & old city gates, colorful markets, Rimbaud House & Harari Museum. Evening Hyena Man performance. Overnight in Harar.
Excursion to Babile Camel Market & Valley of Marvels
Visit Babile Camel Market (only Mondays & Thursdays) – Ethiopia’s largest. Explore the Valley of Marvels with its unusual rock formations. Continue sightseeing in Harar, including the Tomb of Emir Nur. Overnight in Harar.
Harar – Dire Dawa – Fly Addis – Departure
Morning drive to Dire Dawa via Aweday chat market. Fly back to Addis Ababa. Evening farewell dinner with cultural dance show & coffee ceremony. Transfer to airport for departure.
