Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival and Addis Ababa Sightseeing – The New Flower City

Upon arrival in Addis Ababa, you’ll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your hotel to refresh. Begin your sightseeing tour with a visit to Mount Entoto, offering stunning panoramic views of the city. Explore the National Museum, home to the famous fossilized remains of ‘Lucy,’ one of the oldest known hominids. Visit the Holy Trinity Cathedral, built during World War II, followed by the Ethnographic Museum, located in the former palace of Emperor Haile Selassie. Immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of Merkato, the largest open-air market in East Africa. Overnight in Addis Ababa.

Day 2

Fly to Mekele – Drive to Dodom – Trek to Erta Ale Volcano

Fly to Mekele and embark on a rugged 5-hour drive to Dodom, at the base of the iconic Erta Ale Volcano. The 70 km journey takes you through ever-changing landscapes of lava fields, rocky terrain, sand dunes, and palm-lined oases. After an early dinner, set off on a 3-hour trek under the stars to the rim of Erta Ale, where camels will have transported your camping gear. Spend the night beside the spectacular, glowing lava lake — one of only five permanent lava lakes in the world and the longest continuously active since the early 20th century. Overnight camping on the volcano rim.

Day 3

Erta Ale – Descend to Dodom – Drive to Hamedela

After breakfast at camp, descend from Erta Ale and return to Dodom by mid-morning for some rest. Later, continue to Hamedela, a small desert village with a population of around 500 people, where you will spend the night camping under the stars. Overnight camping in Hamedela.

Day 4

Hamedela – Salt Mining at Ragad – Dallol – Lake Assal – Mekele

Visit Ragad (Asebo) to witness traditional salt mining. Watch as locals break salt slabs from the earth, cut them into blocks, and load them onto camel caravans. Journey onward to the surreal landscapes of Dallol, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth at 116 meters below sea level. Explore colorful sulfur springs, salt formations, and volcanic activity unique to this region. Visit Lake Assal and follow the camel caravans, walking alongside the resilient Afar people. Return to Hamedela before driving back to Mekele. Overnight in Mekele (optional depending on flight schedule).

Day 5

Fly to Addis Ababa – Cultural Dinner – Departure

Fly back to Addis Ababa for your final day. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Ethiopian folkloric dinner featuring a variety of national dishes, vibrant cultural dances from Ethiopia’s diverse ethnic groups, and the iconic Ethiopian coffee ceremony. After dinner, transfer to the airport for your onward departure
